So, you finished a sweater or a shawl, and it needs finishing. Now what?

Welcome to finishing school. We’ll be going over simple steps to make your project look handmade, not homemade. This three-class series is appropriate for beginner to intermediate knitters.

Class One: Blocking

  • Wet blocking
  • Steam blocking
  • Spray blocking
  • Blocking Tools (T-pins, lace wires, blocking cards, etc.)

Bring with you to Class One

Students should come to class with a finished project ready to block, a LARGE cardboard box (big enough to hold a sweater or shawl, fully stretched out), measuring tape, and T-pins. T-pins and measuring tapes can be purchased and I’ll bring a couple of extra boxes.

Class Two: Sewing Up

  • Sewing in ends and joining as you go (very minor homework before class, see below)
  • Mattress stitch
  • Kitchner stitch (knit only)

Class Three: Finishing

Options for hemlines, necklines, and cuffs. Bring another option, if you like.

  • I-cord edging
  • Ribbing v. garter stitch v. seed stitch for standard cast-off
  • How to keep your edges from rolling (less) with a knitted edge
  • Strengthening the structure of top-down knits for durability

Homework Before Class Two and Three

This may take you an hour or so to complete

  1. Cast on 40 stitches in lighter colored Worsted or DK yarn to see your stitches, work four (4) rows of garter stitch and four (4) rows of knit stitch, leaving the stitches on the needles and have at least 25 gm of yarn to play around with.
  2. Cast on another 40 stitches in an alternate color in lighter colored Worsted or DK yarn to see your stitches, work four (4) rows of garter stitch and four (4) rows of knit stitch, leaving the stitches on the needles and have at least 25 gm of yarn to play around with.
  3. Have at least 25 gm of yarn in the same weight but another color for the sewing up exercises.
